Abuse can take many forms. You may be experiencing abuse if your partner:

  • Throws objects at you
  • Prevents you from leaving

Emotional Abuse

  • Constantly criticizes or humiliates you
  • Controls where you go and who you see
  • Threatens to harm you, your children, or pets
  • Makes you feel worthless or afraid

Financial Abuse

  • Controls all the money
  • Prevents you from working
  • Gives you an "allowance"
  • Runs up debts in your name

Sexual Abuse

  • Forces you into sexual acts
  • Ignores your refusal

If any of these sound familiar, please reach out. You deserve help.

Safety planning

Safety Planning Tips

Even if you're not ready to leave, having a safety plan is important:

  • Know your exits – Identify escape routes from your home
  • Pack an emergency bag – Keep important documents, medication, money, and clothes in a safe place
  • Memorize important numbers – Crisis line, trusted friend, police
  • Tell someone you trust – A friend, family member, or co-worker
  • Create a code word – To alert others you need help

Call us anytime to create a detailed safety plan with our staff.

What to Bring to the Shelter

If possible, try to bring these items. But don't delay leaving if it's not safe to gather them.

Documents

ID, health cards, birth certificates, custody papers, immigration documents

Medications

Prescriptions for you and your children, glasses, personal care items

Money & Keys

Cash, bank cards, keys, phone and charger

Your safety is more important than any belongings. Leave immediately if you're in danger.
